“Promissory Estoppel is a legal doctrine where a promise is enforceable even if there is no contract or a formal consideration. It takes into account the impact of the promisor making a promise to the promisee, who has relied on the promise facing subsequent detriment.”

Promissory Estoppel is to stop the promisor from arguing why a promise he made should not be legally enforced.

For Example in an employee and employer relationship, an employer might have committed orally to give a certain benefit when the employee retires. The employee can take legal action if the promise is not fulfilled by the employer.
