Production rate: Production rate is defined as the number of product units produced in the given time interval. Thus it can be written as

Production rate = No. of production produced / no. of time units.

Thus it will give the number of units produced in one unit time interval.

In the above case 20 similar stations are available. Each station produces same product in one station only. There are 50 units kept as buffer between the stations. The buffer storage between the stations is 50 nos.

Production rate = 50 / 2 stations = 25 numbers/station

Thus the production rate for the above 20 station operations is = 25 numbers/ station.

Throughput time: Production through put time is defined as the time required for a product to pass through the all the operations of production line. Thus the time duration of a product from start of the first operation to end of the last operation in the production line is known as throughput time of the line.

Throughput time = Time duration of one product from first operation to last operation

Throughput time = Total time units / number of products produced in the given time

                          = 1 / 25

                         = 0.04 units.
