Both ends of the continuum are losing trust and collaboration between people and nations. Centralized control mechanisms may seem appropriate to avoid or postpone the virus transmission, and to compensate for poor individual and community resistance, which can also cause damage. Where a robust policy solution is considered appropriate, company will eventually be affected, with both near-term consequences and less-anticipated longer-term effects. Overall, growth in China's GDP could slow this year by 0.5 percentage points, taking at least 0.1 percentage point off global GDP growth. This will cascade through heavily reliant developing and emerging markets on China – whether in the form of commerce, tourism or investment. Any of these countries show pre-existing economic fragility, others (recognizing an overlap) have poor health services and thus lower pandemic resistance. Many countries in Asia and Africa lack supervisory, testing, and hospital resources to locate, separate, and treat patients during an epidemic. Everywhere, inadequate networks pose a danger to health protection, increasing the likelihood of contagion.

In addition to traditional corporate sustainability issues, workforce security and consumer survival, businesses – and governments – will take a fresh look at their vulnerability to dynamic and changing interdependencies that may exacerbate the consequences of pandemics and other emergencies. Given the fear and despair process of pandemic preparedness, after COVID-19 is controlled, it is possible that most of the planet will succumb to complacency and remain under-prepared for the imminent next explosion. Businesses invested in political, technological, and financial stability should be well prepared to adapt and recover to rising global threats.
