Who has the burden of ensuring that nonverbal communication is accurately interpreted: the sender or the receiver?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Non-verbal communication is conveyed using gesture, facial expression, tone, Pitch, body language and distance speaker keeps from listener.

Non-Verbal Communication can be conscious or unconscious. Sender has no control over his/her non-Verbal Communications. For example, facial expressions are usually very hard to control.

Thus burden of ensuring non-verbal communication is interpreted accurately falls on the receiver. This can be achieved by asking follow up questions and reiterating/paraphrasing the conversation to make sure the receiver has received the message accurately.

EQ & ACK # Consider the figure below (simplex communication scenario). The TCP sender sends an initial window of 4 segments. Suppose the initial value of the sender->receiver sequence number is 300 and the first 4 segments each contain 400 bytes of payload. As you can see ACK 3 is lost. What is the SEQ number (SEQ1, SEQ2, SEQ3, SEQ4, SEQ5) from the Sender and ACK Number (ACK1, ACK2, ACK3, ACK4, ACK5) from the receiver for each segment?

As we have discussed in the class, nonverbal codes have many functions including reinforcing, replacing or contradicting the verbal message. They can also regulate interactions, create immediacy and deceive. There are a large variety of nonverbal cues (some that you might not have considered before such as artifacts, environment and silence). Being aware of nonverbal codes is important to effective communication when being the sender of the message, the receiver, or even being an observer of communication. Therefore, for the...

Consider a noisy communication channel, where each bit is flipped with probability p (the probability that a bit is sent in error is p). Assume that n−1 bits, b1,b2,⋯,b(n−1), are going to be sent on this channel. A parity check bit is added to these bits so that the sum b1+b2+⋯+bn is an even number. This way, the receiver can distinguish occurrence of odd number of errors, that is, if one, three, or any odd number of errors occur, the...
