The privatization of public services defines many elements of today’s public sector. Is there is a limit to what can or cannot be privatized? Should there be such a limit?
The public sector is a basic feature of a socialist model of economy, whereas the private sector is direct outcome of a capitalist model of economy. Public sector exists to provide equal opportunities for all and individual performance matters less. Public service organisations are not profit oriented and they are more focussed on redistribution of wealth. They perform tasks which should not be given to private sector. Private sector companies exist for making profit and the individuals who contribute more towards this goal are suitably rewarded.
Privatisation of certain public services which can be handled by the private sector are seen nowadays. Typically such areas are manufacturing industries, civil works, communication networks etc. However, there should be a limit to such privatisation. Certain functions are inseparable from the state and should be handled as a public service only. For example, Politics & Governance, Law & order, Defence services (Army, navy, airforce) etc must not be privatised. Privatisation of these state functions may lead to corruption and chaos.
