Identify family entrepreneur’s response to planning and setting strategy and Mintzberg’s response.

Planning and setting-up plans can be easily avoided in family businesses. Planing offers less flexibility for people and requires them to connect with the client. This, in turn, keeps family entrepreneurs from developing a business that is more successful. Mintzberg says: "We need a lot of strategic preparation to shift from a small business into a large company, where logistics such as distribution, etc. You just have to learn to live with it. It's good to prepare. You have to schedule something. "He explains that a organization would inevitably fail without preparation.

Explain some of the constraints discussed in the article based upon family traditions.

Because of family values, family companies may either increase or decline. Most family firms , for example from father to son, believe the transition to the next generation. There is, however, no assurance that this move is the best thing for the company. Mintzberg says that family-run businesses should be left open to "greater" growth , meaning that the company is included in statute, relatives, or other distant family members. This is because all kids are not as big or motivated as their parents. Family feuds can also quickly lead a company into the ground, and family management should therefore be prudent when incorporating family members in management positions.

What does the author mean by confusing success with actual skill?

The argument that a successful person lacks real experience means that, while a person may run a successful business, he or she does not have the capacity to produce or sustain that success. For example, a competent father could create a successful company and transmit it to his son. But if the son isn't able to sustain it, the achievement is just due to the previous management 's qualifications.
