America in its ever changing evolution is in the precepts of social
indignations when it comes to immigration, leading to race clashes
and political upheaval. While there are some in society ready for
change there are others who are not. Deep lines are being drawn on
the subject, that will forever change the fabric of our country.
There is a call and need to vocalize the need for change when it
comes to immigration reform practices. To have I.C.E. (Immigration
and Customs Enforcement) picking up non-violent immigrants off our
streets, or pulling them apart from their families literally by
force is not the American dream promised. It is the American
nightmare realized. The latter may be reminiscent to behavior which
some left their own countries to escape. Behaviors that are malign
by America when done in other countries, are now being seen taking
place here, with frequency and diligence. America was
once the shores of relief and hope, are we to rethink this thought
and take into consideration that instead of open shores what
America is to become is the land of walls.
The recent actions taken in this country toward immigration has and will test nonconformists ideology on the subject. "Not all persons speak as readily and freely as they once dared to. Nonconformism, which was once tolerated if not admired, is now suspect (Dionne, 2007). There must be direct and vehement dialogue to the subject and happenings if there is to be change on the terms of immigration of those who enter and to the course of action of those whom are already here and a part of the fabric of this country. "One reason we don't have Europe's enclaves is our unique success in forging an ethnically and religiously neutral national identity, uniting individuals of all backgrounds" (Muller, 2014, pg. 337). ...In about 300 words.
To critique the article we need to study the following statistics first:
Immigrants comprise 14 percent of the US population i.e. 43 million out of the 343 million people. The US gave permanent residency to 1.2 million individuals in 2016. Immigrants make up 17% of the US workforce in 2014. Immigrants comprise 45% of the domestic employees. The US workforce is going to decline from 173.2 million in 2015 to around 165 million in 2035.
The need for the additional workforce and sustaining the US workforce with fair migrant laws is critical for its continuous growth and development. The US has realized the need for the skilled and super skilled-trained workforce, which they can find with a zest and zeal to achieve good life only in the migrants who are hungry to grow and improve their standard of living. A survey indicates that 71% of Americans consider immigration a good thing and 84% supported the legalizing of illegal immigrants.
Considering above data and statistics the attitude of The US government and the laws which are anti migrants blaming them for an increase in crime rates and taking their jobs is a clear violation of human right and encourages inhuman practices like ICE which has made 143,470 arrests in 2017 a 30percent increase from 2016. The ICE makes street arrests without a warrant and is targeting 12 million undocumented people. The government has put 800,000 DACA recipients at risk of deportation. The government is fixed on not providing any support to the immigrants and have taken an inhuman view of raiding and deporting them.
The culture of the diversity and socially equal laws for the diverse US population is taking a beating in policies and image due to anti-migrant laws and behavior of hate and victimizing the migrants.
The public has also started taking a negative view towards migrants as they feel they would take away their jobs and impact their social structure but the fact remains that the US is a diverse multicultural country since centuries and targeting the new migrants will only stop their economic development and increase the cost of labor resulting in increase of overall cost of living. The US dream has become a nightmare with constantly changing laws and policies.
