What are the main differences among trait, behavioural, and contingency (situational) leadership theories?
Leadership theories are basics of thought brought forward to explain how and why certain individuals become leaders. The theories drove the traits. Leadership meant to the ability of an individual or an organization to guide individuals, teams, or organizations toward the fulfillment of goals and objectives different leadership theories are very much helpful in enhancing leadership effectiveness and these theories have contributed to change in behavior or thinking in the following manner.
Trait Theory
Trait theory says that leadership effectiveness is highly determined by the inborn traits that people possess. The major criticism for this theory is that the traits may not result in leadership because many people possess traits required for leaders but they are not in a leadership position. This type of leadership is focussing on physical traits, demographic features, family background, etc.
Behavioral Theory
Behavioral Theory is a theory that emphasizes the actions of leaders than their traits or characteristics. According to this theory, leaders could improve and modify their leadership skills through teaching, learning, and observation. A believer in this theory may improve his behavior continuously.
Contingency Theory
Contingency Theory says that the leadership style that is effective in one situation need not be effective in another situation. Contingency Theory also says that leadership occurs when the traits meet a leadership situation.
Situational Theory
Situational Theory is very much similar to the contingency theory. It tells us that no single leadership style is superior over another leadership style. Here the leadership style is determined by considering the situation as well as the maturity of the followers.
The main differences between Trait and Behavioral Define a leader's effectiveness based on individual characteristics; Defines a leader's effectiveness based on task and relationship orientation. Assumes that leaders are born. Theories goal – develop leaders.
These theories were very close together in time periods, therefore, the behavior which came first stated there is one best way to lead, whereas the situational theory said there was not.
