MIS have made many business successful today but improper use of information technology can create problems for company and employees.

Ethics in MIS seek to protect and safeguard individuals and society by using information systems responsibility.

MIS also raise new ethical questions because they create opportunities for

  • Intense social change, threatning, existing distributions of power, money, rights and obligations.
  • New Kinds of crime

Ethics Issues:

Privacy - Security of personal information of user is most important in these times. Many users data have been leaked or hacked giving away users personal informations like credit card details, info on various accounts, etc.

Accuracy - If data is leaked, then who is accountable for mistakes in information and exactly how the injured party or individual get justice?

Property - Who owns the data? Is it just and fair to exchange the information? Are companies justified to own users personal data?

Accessbility - What information does a person or business have right to obtain and under what conditions?

Confidentiality - How secured the data is? Who can get access to the data or information like should managers get access to the employees medical documents or psychological profile.

Social Responsibilty - Companies have the obligation to protect information, data processing setting ethical standards mainly competence, confidentially of inforamtion.

Ethics issues become legal

There are various ethical issues in MIS in the current times some of which are very critical and required to become legal.

There are still some laws governing the ethical issues but mostly the the security of Information systems but as data and information is becoming very important.

Governments have to pass laws in the future as data privacy and concerns are growing in the public and are demanded by them to protect and safeguard the information systems.

Some countries have very strict data privacy laws like switzerland and some are also working towards better and improved laws for MIS.
