The common law system in England and Wales is depended on precedent idea wherein the decision is made by the court regarding a case and the decision becomes an essential part of the country's law.

It is difficult for the government to change the common law. For example the essential mandatory life sentence for the purpose of murder.

There is common law used in places that used to be governed by the British including India, Australia and the USA.

The Civil law is depended on legislation and written laws that the government makes.

It is the common legal system and used in countries of South America, Asia and Europe. The Civil law system is used and developed from the Roman law

There are few countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia that have Islamic law based system while countries like India have a mix of civil and common law wherein legal laws are also incorporated
