The most useful measure for an operations manager is the efficiency of an entity as it highlights the way in which the resource is getting used by the business process. Efficiency also helps in maintaining company’s competitive edge.

Small businesses are very compact and have limited but important business functions. The management in small business is involved in all small and big activities pertaining to business.

  • The first and foremost responsibility of the manager is to develop the management style for the business-whether the company will be autocratic, democratic or paternalistic. This gives direction to management as to how to take care of the employees and create the company culture
  • Based on the management style, core cultural values, vision and mission of business are created. Usually the mission and vision are very straight forward and crisp for a small business
  • For a small business to be effective, it is very critical that the right talent is hired. So, it is the responsibility of the manager to identify the core competencies required for the job and conducts the hiring process to find the best job fit.
  • Clear identification of roles and functions is important in small businesses, as the scope of such company is quite small. Hence, the manager must delegate the ownership of each critical function to the best-hired recruit.
  • The management must decide upon which management tools must be used to represent the work and data of the department effectively
  • The integration of MIS in the business system is imperative as it facilitates data handling of the company and the employees can engage in more core jobs
  • Manager, along with his team must conduct SWOT analysis and Porter’s 5 forces analysis to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the company as well as the competitors. This helps in creating the niche base for the company.
  • The manager in small business must align all the resources towards the alignment of business. This helps in fulfilling the strategic objectives of company quickly.

A manager of a small business must be very proactive and cautious. A small error in small business can sink the whole company. Following are the things that a small business manager must never do:

  • Taking any decision without doing background work and research
  • Going wrong with the hiring process. In a small business, small numbers of employees are present who must be capable enough to do their job. Hiring mistake can cost huge losses to the company in the long run.
  • Competitors must not be taken lightly
  • Customers must not be taken for granted. Small businesses usually form a niche base with small customer base. It is critical to keep customer and his desires in the foremost for the company.
