Your assignment is to produce a short paper that addresses the following topics. As I mentioned before, these are debatable issues, so your answer will rarely be considered “right” or “wrong”. The point is to not only have you be familiar with the issues, but to encourage you to understand, while not necessarily agree, with those who hold differing opinions. As always, your expression of your thoughts in a college level manner is expected and required. Please label each response with the corresponding number below.

  1. Overall, are you in favor of affirmative action programs or opposed to them? Provide a rationale for your position.
  2. Which of the arguments you’ve read about that take a position contrary to yours do you feel are worthy of consideration? What ideas do you have that might be put into practice to address these concerns?
  3. If, in #1, you expressed support for these programs, address the concept of how long they should be in place. Answers could range from “until no discrimination exists” to “next year”.

If, in #1, you expressed dissatisfaction with these programs, what alternative do you have that would take their place in instances where disparate treatment or disparate impact have been identified as having taken place?

Answer #1

I am in favour of affirmative actions programs, because i beleive if implemented properly these programs can eradicate every kind of discrimination amongst individuals based on their caste, creed, colour etc. There are still schools, colleges, offices, workplaces, events and other places where diversity isn't found whether it's on the basis of sexuality or region. Thus, these affirmative Action Programs become even more significant to bring a balance in all sectors of life. For example, talking about the Biggest IT companies across the globe, they accumulate 77 % of male workforce as compared to only 23 % female workforce. Same can be seen in Politics where there have been very few female Presidents around the Globe for Different countries as compared to male candidates, and that arises from the grass root level, as there are very few female representatives who are given an opportunity to represent their political parties. This was based on sexuality, however we also can notice race based discrimination in corporate jobs in USA, wherein most of top level employees in the hierarchy are white Americans as compared to Black Americans.

If we roll our eyes around, we would notice Discrimination all around us in every sector of life, and its high time to put these affirmative action programs into place to treat everyone equally and give everyone equal oppurtunity to make their lifes better.

#1 If these Affirmative Action Programs could be started all at once, and one by one each program is focussed on and finished to eradicate one problem at a time, only that the whole system can be put straight benefiting each and everyone who is a part of it. Concerning the major issues and verticals of day to day life, if considerable amount of money is put into these programs than in next 40 - 50 years we could be the virge of zero discrimination, however i still beleive with time there would new problems coming in which dont exist right now, thus these prigrams have to be implemented like continuous improvement plan for long term success.
