For this key assignment you will be conducting research and writing a paper on stereotypes and how they act as barriers to critical thinking. Please follow these guidelines and questions: Specifically you will be investigating and researching stereotypes that personally affect you or interest you. You could research stereotypes that affect you as a student, your gender, your culture, your religion or even age. You could look into a stereotype that is associated with your chosen profession or activities you do. The important aspect to remember is that your voice and experience should be the main focus on the project, and your sources and research should back up and support what you have to say. Consider these questions: Why did you choose this stereotype? Provide background on why you choose the stereotype you did, and why it is important to you to write about. How does this stereotype affect you? What impact has it had, or might it have, in your life? How does this identified stereotype act as a barrier when critical thinking is concerned? What is the importance of being able to think critically when dealing with stereotypes? What steps could you take to change the perception or influence this stereotype has in your life? You may discuss more than one stereotype in your paper. Women have always been subjected to stereotyping at the workplace. The glass ceiling between the success and aspirations of women has persisted over the years. Gender-based stereotyping has always been a mindset of people and this has been an obstruction in the success of women at the workplace.

If the world statistics is taken into account, just 3% of overall CEOs of companies are women CEOs. People keep thinking that women will have to leave their job after marriage or for having kids, and so they limit the opportunities offered to women. Also, if a woman shows the perseverance and determination to be on the top, character judgments are made about her that she is over ambitious.

This stereotyping affects the way in which the career of a woman progresses in the work sphere. The opportunities are usually offered to men, totally ignoring the credibility and talent of women. This has affected the critical thinking of women as well, as most of them have accepted the fact that the glass ceiling will exist till eternity. The bias and judgmental perspective of people has affected the critical thinking of women as they know, even if they win big contracts, company may overlook it, totally basing the bias on her gender.

However, women must not stop trying to break and shatter this glass ceiling at the workplace. They need to fight for their rights and a chair in the board. This is because they are capable enough of handling such critical positions. A study reflected that women are better decision makers than men and if given adequate opportunities, she has the power to achieve anything. Take the example of Mary Bara, Sheryl Sandberg or Indra Nooyi. These women have proved that women have the capability of running organizations effectively.

Nowadays, even the companies have understood the futility of such stereotyping and have been working hard to break such class ceiling. Some of the steps taken by companies in this regard are:

• Reserving a percentage occupancy for women in the Board
• Providing ample benefits to women to balance their work and personal life and shine in their work
• Succession planning and mentorship for women
