Argument Diagrams

Directions: Using the numbers provided for each statement, construct an argument diagram for each argument.

If you can create diagrams in a word document, the best way to send it is as a PDF file, but any format is okay as long as the diagram pattern is clear. Sending an attached picture is okay. If you cannot submit drawn diagrams, you can describe your diagram like as follows:

Independent support = “1>3; 2>3” – This shows that 1 and 2 each provide independent (separate) support for 3, which is the conclusion.

Interdependent Support = “(1+2)>3” – This shows that 1 and 2 together provide interdependent (joint) support for 3, which is the conclusion.

Subconclusion Support = “1>2>3” – This shows that 1 supports 2, and 2 supports 3. Statement 2 is a subconclusion, and 3 is the final conclusion.

Example of describing a diagram: The diagram for #10 is represented as "1>3; 2>3; (3+4)>5".

Arguments to diagram:

#1. Despite the fact that 1[Salima’s conclusion seems preposterous], 2[I have no choice but to accept it as true], since 3[I accept the truth of all of her premises], and 4[her argument clearly has a valid form].

#2.1[Cindy is guilty of shooting the victim], because 2[Cindy’s fingerprints match those on the gun found under the seat], and 3[that gun was the gun used to shoot the victim].

#3.1[Gremmies have gills]. 2[Gremmies live in the water].

#4.1[The Phillies have an improved pitching staff], and 2[they have more power in their batting line up]. 3[Things are looking up for the Phillies this year].

1. The conclusion here is to accept Salima's conclusion as true. "1>2,(3+4)>2"

2 = Interdependent support example, “(2+3)>1”

The conclusion is Cindy is guilty of shooting. The conclusion is provided support by matching of fingerprints on a gun that was used to kill the victim.

3 Independent support, "1>2". Gremmies have gills (support statement) so they must be living in water (conclusion)

4 Interdependent support, "(1+2)>3". Conclusion here is things are looking good for Philles as they have improved ptiching staff and power in batting line-up.
