If a store detains a customer for alleged shoplifting, would that automatically be considered a basis for a claim of false imprisonment? Discuss
A store can detain a customer for alleged shoplifting if they have reasonable basis to suspect the customer. It doesn't amount to false imprisonment until the detaining is done reasonably. For example. If an alleged shoplifting customer is taken to manager office and detained there for few minutes to question him about the item for which he is alleged can not be considered as false imprisonment. But if he is detained by the staffs by chaining and humiliating him in front of other customers can be ground for claiming false imprisonment.
