Problem-based learning

The focus for this problem-based learning exercise is twofold – strategy and tactics of integrative negotiation and the importance of using strategy and planning for negotiations. Please take THREE of the following learning goals, and discuss, in a paragraph EACH (e.g. three total, meaty paragraphs)********, the knowledge you have gained about each. You may demonstrate this knowledge through application. Because the emphasis on this assignment is problem-based learning, you are welcome and encouraged to structure this exercise around an actual negotiation problem you might be currently experiencing. For instance, perhaps you are trying to get your child to clean his room (not that I have any experience in that whatsoever?). Take that and apply what you have learned from three of the below to that circumstance. It is my hope that you find this assignment both informative and useful.

  • Experience the basic elements of an integrative negotiation situation
  • Explore the strategy and tactics of integrative negotiation
  • Evaluate the key factors that facilitate successful integrative negotiation
  • Demonstrate understanding of why successful integrative negotiations are often difficult to achieve
  • Consider the importance of setting goals for an upcoming negotiation
  • Explore the major elements of a process for selecting a negotiation strategy and how to execute that strategy

Answer #1

Integrative negotiation is a situation in which all the parties of the individuals do not lose anything. There is a win-win situation for all members. If I am making my child clean the room in this situation I will be getting time to relax as I do not have to perform all the activities and the child will also learn to clean the room and he will be more independent. So, there is a win-win situation for me and my child. So, the basic elements of integrative negotiation are that a problem-solving attitude will be developed. There is also a scenario of building a sense of shared responsibility. This helps in building a strong relationship.

The strategy and tactics of integrative negotiation are that it focuses on working on the common things or thinking rather than working on the differences among the individuals. A mutual gain is enjoyed by both parties. In this case, my so will learn how to do things himself and this he will learn from me so interdependency is also developed. Both of us will enjoy mutual gain by sharing the work.

The successful integrative negotiations are often difficult to achieve as there may be a chance that there are not good relationships between the parties. In this case, if I and my child do nat share a happy relationship then it will be difficult to make him learn new things and the scenario will change from win-win to win-loose. Another reason is that there may be thinking that the work can only be performed by distributing it. A conflicting situation can also ariese making the integrative negotiations difficult to acheive.
