Mathematically speaking, assuming that an item is performing its intended function at time zero, reliability can be defined as the probability that it will continue to perform its intended function without failure for a specified period under stated conditions

Plan A involves a series system which means the system works only if all the component works. The status of the series function is given by the equation:

that is series reliability = 0.99 *0.96*0.93 = 0.88

Plan B involves a parallel system which means the system works even if at least one component is working. The parallel system can be indicated using the function

that is parallel reliability = 1-[(1-0.99)(1-0.96)(1-0.93)
