Special care units are nursing home areas dedicated to providing care for patients with dementia. The idea of Special care units generated for the people with cognitive disabilities, these people must find an environment in which their needs can be met and they can maintain a high quality of life. The development of Special care units physically seperate nursing home units that provide care for meet the special needs of individuals with dementia.

The Special care units exist because the physical environment of traditional nursing home is inappropriate for people with dementia, there will be announcements, television, noise so this will create confusion to dementia patients, Special care units can give a " home -like" feel to dementia patients and these units provide enough space for wandering which will not available in traditional nursing homes. In traditional nursing the staff will not have adequate knowledge to take care of dementia patients, the staff do not have requisite training to anticipate the needs of dementia patients. Proper facilities, knowledge of staff, utmost care are all available only in Special care units. These kind of patients need utmost care because they are unable to communicate what they feel.

Adequate number of staff must be present to take care of dementia patients and there is a need for continuity, traditional nursing home do not have adequate staff to provide the continuity in personnel and daily routines required to meet the individual needs of dementia patients.

The needs and wants of dementia patients cannot be fulfilled by traditional nursing homes that is why Special Care Units exists.
