1. Make a list of the major deliverables for the project and use them to develop a draft of the work breakdown structure for the tournament that contains at least three levels of detail. What are the major deliverables associated with hosting an event such as a soccer tournament?

2. How would developing a WBS alleviate some of the problems that occurred during the first meeting and help Nicolette organize and plan the project?

3. How could Nicolette and her task force use the WBS to generate cost estimates for the tournament? Why would this be useful information?

Answer #1

1.

The deliverables for the football tournament would be to find the right number, staff including security personnel, suppliers, or arbitrators and then to fund the stadium and help to raise money and reserve the case. The soccer tournament itself would be the first level of detail and importance, as it is the main event. The second level would then be the results previously listed. Last but not least, the third level could be stadium cleaning or adequate parking for visitors.

List :

1. Venue - major deliverable

1.1 Event Dates

1.2. Soccer fields

1.2.1. Parking

1.2.2. Sales areas for fundraising

1.3. Cost of Venue (donation?)

1.4. Referees

1.4.2. Qualified

1.4.3. Professional

2. Team Management - major deliverable

2.1. Screening

2.1.1. Age

2.1.2. Gender

2.2. Registration fees

2.2.1. Individual participants

2.2.1.1. Complimentary T-shirt

2.2.1.2. Complimentary meal

2.2.2. Teams

2.3. Recognition

2.3.1. Decide type

2.3.1.1. Medals

2.3.1.2. Trophies

2.3.2. Source recognition items

2.3.3. Award presentation

2.3.3.1. Top team by category

2.3.3.2. Consolation awards

3. Fund Raising - major deliverable

3.1. Corporate Sponsors

3.2. T-shirt Sales

3.3. Admission costs

2.

The WBS provides a checklist structure within which she can shape the dialog and get the participants to address each issue needing attention. It would also allow the prioritization of critical tasks while noting important and less critical concerns identified by parents and other participants. The result would be the ability to address the project steps, resources, timeline, and enable the tasking of “owners” within the project to work sections toward completion..

3.

The WBS allows all work packages that require funding to be looked at as a whole, and break out work that is no cost (volunteer, sponsored). This information is useful for many reasons. One benefit to packaging smaller sections of cost may increase fund raising efforts where corporate sponsors can be approached to sponsor a section of the overall tournament at a manageable cost, and enable smaller businesses to be approached for this sponsorship. An accurate budget will allow Nicolette and her task force to manage cost estimates for the tournament – to help them keep it within budget.
