Functional strategies as name suggests are the strategies that are applied at functional level of an organization such as sales & marketing function, human resource function, finance function etc. Functional strategies supports the top level management and middle level management strategies.

Since functional strategies are different for different functions, they are formulated separately for each function after critical analysis and consideration of environment, However each and every strategy is made in sync with corporate strategy because the ultimate strategy for an organization is the corporate strategy. In order to achieve consistency and effectiveness in corporate strategy, functional strategies need to be coordinated and related to each other.

Thus, functional strategies are interdependent and need to be formulated in relation to other functions.
