Trait approach theories are distinguishing qualities in a person and their characteristics where their successful leadership show others (Warrick, 2016). Behavioral theory styles are them being focused on leader behaviors other than their traits. Both leadership styles interact with coworkers to get assignments done and on time. Trait approach theories suggest that all people have certain traits but to varying degrees. Some people have more of a certain trait and some people have less of a certain trait. Trait theories have five factor models that vary by small differences such as openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Trait theories hold an important role in leadership because it shows habitual patterns of leadership behavior. Having been characterized by confidence, free expression of impulses, extraverted individuals are described by dominance, self-confidence and happiness (Barta, Tamas, Szamoskozl, 2018). Trait theories were the earliest theories that leadership scholars formally investigated (Warrick, 2016). Behavioral theories are getting things done and being a role model and how it is helping people and their performances. Behavioral theories are how leader traits and behaviors influencing leadership effectiveness (Nason, Bacq, Gras, 2018). Having behavioral theories is having special traits of inspiring others, leading a change, being mindful and displaying creativity. The traits that are alike are demonstrating courage and grit, learning from experience and communicating effectively.
Leadership is a process that influences the subordinates and employees to complete a particular task effectively and efficiently. The leader also directs and supervises the organization functions and processes to complete the tasks. Every company requires a leader because it enhances the process of accomplishing the company's goals and mission. The leader helps the company to make the day to day activities perfect and efficient. There are two significant approaches to leadership: the trait approach and the behavioral approach. The trait theory of leadership distinguished the leaders and non-leaders based on skillset and other characteristics. It is also known as an implicit theory. The theory evidently and stresses on the fact that some specific essential characteristics and skills make an individual a leader and the other a non-leader. Some of the essential traits of leadership are intelligence, teamwork, flexible, and trustworthy. The theory's significant outcome is that it mentions that the traits of leadership are inborn in the individuals, but that is not true because individuals can acquire these traits.
On the other hand, the behavioral approach states that different behaviors differentiate a leader from the non-leader. The only difference is that this approach does not mention that these behaviors are inbuilt in the leaders. It states that any individual can adopt this behavior to become a leader. It is a more reliable and specific theory. The behaviors can be focus on work, focus on goals, and focus on people or workforce. Hence, both the theories star different approaches for a leadership style.
