Could a matrix structure improve performance for an organization familiar to you?
How can the disadvantages of group decision making hurt team
structures?
Answer 1:
Matrix structure can improve performance for an organization depending on type of organization if properly implemented. This structure combines functional and divisional structures. Because of its dual and complicated reporting structure, it often poses challenge for employees.
The organization I am familiar with is a pharmaceutical manufacturing company. I believe that matrix structure can improve performance of a pharmaceutical manufacturing company but initially resistance from employees will be the biggest challenge in implementing matrix structure. The simple reason is employees are used to work in traditional hierarchy and implementing a structure where reporting relationships are set up as a matrix can cause employee dissatisfaction.
However, with proper training and highlighting benefits of matrix structure gradually it will improve organizational performance. Matrix structure will ensure inter-departmental corporation, flexibility, better decision making and accountability. All these elements in turn will improve organizational performance.
Answer 2:
The disadvantages of group decision making can hurt team structures because such decision making exercise gives rise to conflicting loyalties between team and functional assignment. If team member is in favour of decision that is beneficial for functional assignment but create complexities in team, it will hurt team structures. To overcome such complexities organizations that have team structure invest heavily in training and team building. Other manner in which disadvantages of group decision making can hurt team structures include:
· Some member might feel intimidated by other and this will create gap between team members.
· Some members might feel dominated and hence it will hurt team structures.
