Q: Explain clearly two (2) of the defenses the Utilitarian’s used to counter the criticisms the theory faced.
A: Two defenses the Utilitarian’s used to counter the criticisms the theory faced are:
i. The biggest defence of the Utilitarian theory is that it is practical, useful, and can be easily used. Our institutions and organisations are faced with several ethical decisions, some of which can be complex and difficult, which need resolution. The Utilitarian theory provides a relatively easy and straightforward approach to address such complexities especially since very few people have training and expertise in moral philosophy will find it difficult to select the best approach and solution and can get stuck.
ii. Another reason for the defence of Utilitarianism or utilitarian theory is that it is a consequential theory which means that the extent and seriousness of the action depends on the consequence of such actions. It is but logical to accept a theory that says the choices we make has no bearing on whether one should carry out or not the action. The consequentialist parts of utilitarianism should be accepted. What is left to decide are the measures of good or bad consequences.
