Perform a BCG analysis on the product offerings for Apple (desktop, laptop, iPod, iPhone, and tablet). Don’t worry about the size of the circles in this version. Which product lines are the most promising? Which ones should be scaled back or eliminated? Are the results surprising?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

If we use the BCG matrix, then we can analyse that

Dogs- Ipod since Ipod market is decreasing and even apple has a low share it due to the high price.

Question Marks- Desktop, Laptop since the Desktop market is still growing but apple has a low share of it. It is dominated by windows PC.

Cash Cows-Tablet is the cash cow since it has a high market share but relatively industry growth rate is declining.

Stars- Apple IPhone is the star of apple since it has a high market share and also high growth rate

Based on this analysis, the most important product lines are Apple Iphone and the tablet where as investment in IPod should be eliminated and investment in desktop and laptop put on hold till further analysis.

The results are not surprising since apple is dominant in the phone segment whereas the computer segment is dominated by windows devices.
