Discuss three basic inbound operations of a warehouse. Which is likely to be the most labour-intensive and why?
Answer
The inbound steps are the receiving and putting away. The outbound processes include handling cus- tomer orders, order picking, inspecting, packing and shipping. Processes outbound are more labor intensive than the processes inbound.
In most warehouses order-picking is the most labour intensive operation. Careful put-away will minimize movement. Each time it is put down means that sometime later it will be picked up again, which is a double-treat. When this double handling is summed up in a factory for both the tens of thousands of skus and hundreds of thousands of bits and/or cases, the expense can be substantial.
