Business Ethics UK law
Emily is the CEO of a large shipping company that is privately owned by a reclusive individual. The nature of the business requires great numbers of heavy trucks to travel through the local town to her central depot. These heavy trucks have caused a disproportionate amount of wear and tear on the local public roads and now they are quite damaged. The local council has approached Emily and asked that the company make a voluntary donation in order to help repair the roads. They point out that not only does her company rely on the roads but so does the local community, her suppliers and the families of her workers. Emily considers her decision and notes that the shipping company already pays all the local taxes that are required of it. Should Emily make a voluntary donation?
As for as voluntary donation is concerned it is not Emily's legal responsibility because she pays taxes, but keeping in view the ethical point of view her shipping company has great number of heavy trucks to travel and because of it the public roads have damaged. So keeping in view her moral responsibility, she is responsible for voluntary donation in order to help prepare the road. This can also be considered as a corporate social responsibility, in which most of the major companies of the world should have responsibility towards society and in this case it becomes more of her company's responsibility to make the road in a good condition because of which the road has been damaged.
