Recommendations to managers to consider in providing effective feedback-
1. Specific- feedback must be concrete and related to goal. It should also include performance of employees and their clear expectations. The employees’ progress and performance should be readily available in a clear, and easy to understand format.
2. Timely- employer should provide the feedback as close to the event as possible. Late feedback is not effective or advisable for employees.
3. Focus on behavior, not personality- always provide feedback which is based on behavior, not the employees characteristics unless absolutely necessary. Employees are more able to change their behavior than their personality.
4. Feedback should not be using judgmental language- avoid using judgmental language, otherwise employee will be defensive. It will also increase the likelihood that the feedback is based on facts or observable behavior.
5. Recurring- feedback should be recurring. Ensure that managers or superiors deliver informal feedback on daily basis or weekly basis.
6. Focused- feedback should be linked to corporate or departmental goals.
7. From multiple sources- feedback from multiple sources is more valid than feedback from single source. Multiple sources include from customers, co-workers, managers, subordinates, top level management and objective measures.
8. Avoid giving unsolicited advice- empower employees to control the feedback agenda by helping them feel comfortable and confident enough to ask for it.
9. Keep feedback private- it is very important for employees.
