You’ve just gotten a job as an autoworker. Would you prefer to work in a unionized or nonunionized plant? Why? If you were hired as a high-level manager in the company, would you want your workers to be unionized? Why, or why not? What’s your opinion on the future of organized labor? Will union membership grow or decline in the next decade? Why, or why not?

Answer #1

If I get a job as an autoworker I would prefer to work in a unionized plant as it provides various incentives over non unionized plants like fixed wage rate, following the safety and security standards, propoer legal regulations as per Labour unions, pensions and retirement benefits and leaves and insurance. Alsoxthe grievances are solved quicker with the support of unions support.  Such benefits may not be available in case of non unionised.

In case I am a high level manager I would not completely go for hiring unionised labour due to legal complications and higher costs. Hiring non unionised labour gives the opportunity to negotiate the terms and give the flexibility of firing and re hiring and the company is free from the pressure of trade or labour unions.

The future of unionised labour is much on decline as the jobs have become challenging and competitive. There is globalisation and deregulation. The demographics of workforce has changed and even the workers are opting for non unionised forms.

As a manager, you may have the power to change your organization’s policies with the stroke of a pen. And you may have the ability to hire, fire, promote and demote people with relatively little effort. But changing an entrenched culture is the toughest task you will face.
