Below are the two major historical developments in the publishing industry:

1. Printing of books: All the books were handwritten until 868 AD and all the authors wrote 2-3 copies of books and used to keep those copies in some popular libraries from where the readers accessed the books. This was the most popular method of book publishing until that time. Then paper printing of books was invented and block printing technique was used in it wherein blocks of wood which had letters and patterns were used which could be printed on paper.

2. Invention of printing press: The printing press was invented around 1500 AD which made the publishing of books quite easy and economical as well. The widespread use of printing press resulted in publishing of newspapers, novels, magazines etc.
