If you are an human resource manager, how could you apply emotional labor to the workplace? and what problems could you encounter when trying to apply emotional labor in workplace?
Emotional labor is an integral part of any business organization because it helps the business to establish trust, connections and strong relationships within organization as well as with the clients or customers. Being a Human Resource Manager, I will apply and alott emotional labor to those areas and fields of organization where direct contact with the clients is required. I will ensure that emotional labor addresses to each of the aspects of clients so that they help in developing good relationship with them through addressing their needs, queries, complaints, etc efficiently and in a very calm manner. The emotional labor will undergo through a short training where they will be imparted necessary knowledge, tactics and strategies about how they can regulate their emotions during interactions or conversations with customers, dealers, suppliers, juniors, subordinates etc so that any scope of arguments , conflicts or heated conversations is prevented to protect the coordination or connection with these parties of organization. Practising of essential skills such as friendly and warm attitude, patience, assertiveness , compassion etc will help to assist them on how managing their emotions will work.
The various common problems which I will encounter when trying to apply emotional labor in workplace will entail :
Changing emotions of labor which might be associated with their specific values, personal norms, beliefs etc will be difficult. For example an individual might consider it fair to Apologise only when at fault. Therefore the labor might not consider some parts of training reasonable and genuine resulting in cognitive dissonance.
The individuals might find it difficult to manage their emotions in times of challenging situations such as angry customer, heated subordinate, adamant client etc.
The emotional labor might also result in job burnout, anxiety, stress and internal confusions by constantly hiding the real emotions . For example being compelled to smile while going through a personal issue.
