Motivating employees is one of the most important and challenging aspects of management. It is not about working hard but also reflects the views of your own capabilities. According to Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, he hypothesized that within every human being, there exists a hierarchy of five needs. Identify and explain the five (5) needs stated by Abraham Maslow providing each need with an example.​

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory in psychology comprising a five-tier model of human needs, usually pictured as hierarchical levels within a pyramid. Malow proposed five level of needs are physiological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization need.

• Psychological needs.

These are the need for survival and include need food and water, clothing and shelter, overall health, and reproduction. Maslow states that these basic physiological desires should be addressed before humans move on to the next level of fulfillment.

How to motivate employees through need theory.

Example:

• Provide them a pleasing and comfortable environment
• Give them “comfortable” remuneration

2. Safety needs - Once an individual’s physiological needs are satisfied, the needs for security arises.

Example:

• Provide properly defined job descriptions.
• Reduce negative stroking and threatening behavior.
• Guarantee “just” compensation and supportive fringe adventages.

Social need

After fulfilling physiological and safety needs, the third level of human need arises is called social need. Social need involves feelings of belongingness. According to this stage interpersonal relationships motivates behavior.

Example:

• Provide personal leadership
• Motivate to participate in professional and community groups
• Provide Compensation on the basis of total performance of team.

Self-Esteem Needs

The next higher level need need for respect, self-esteem, and self-confidence. It's the desire to be accepted and valued by others.

• Participant employees in setting goals and decision-making processes
• Provide ways and opportunities to display their talents and skills
• Make opportunities for coaching and development

Use a positive reinforcement program.

Self-Actualization Needs
are the highest level in Maslow's need hierarchy. According to Maslow this level as the desire to fulfill everything that one can, to become the most that one can be.

Example,

• Provides opportunities for career-development plan.
• Provide job rotation inorder to broaden experience and exposure.
