John Winthrop gave a speech to the colonists on board the ship “Arbella” as they were about to land to establish the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He exhorted them to be like a “City on a Hill” - in other words to be a model community for all the people of the world. Many presidents and others have said the the United States is and should continue to strive to be a “City on a Hill” for all the world. Is the United States a “City on a Hill”? Why or why not?

United States is in many ways a “City On Hill” and this is due to the following reasons:

  • A thriving democratic system of governance.
  • A well developed economic system and the leading economy in the world.
  • World leader in various technologies and innovation.
  • Home to many immigrants who come to USA and drive prosperity and gets assimilated to the system.
  • Very well developed infrastructure.
  • Very good laws and enforcement of laws leading to a peaceful and fair societal system.
  • Well developed education systems.

USA is truly a marvellous society which is an example of how people from various parts of the world has come together and they can pursue the “American Dream” and prosper and thrive in this land through virtues of hard work, entrepreneurship and innovation.

All these enabling features of the American society makes it a leading and thriving society and it can be called a model society.
