Self-directed work teams appear to be growing in popularity. What were the traditional monitoring and controlling functions that were performed, how are each performed with self-directed work teams, and what is the rationale, if any, for why the self-directed team approach is better?

self directed work teams are the teams where people with different skills and ideas work together as a team without general supervision from higher officials. These teams are free to work on their own plans and this helps in projects like innovations. They monitor their work themselves by conducting team meetings and analysing the expected resuts. Then they themselves decide what to do next. They have control on themselves and hence are free to take their own decisions. There will be no pressure and under this circumstances there is more scope for new inventions and great innovations. Hence self directed team approach is better .
