Identify a current change in an organization with which you are familiar. Alternatively, identify a current public issue about which "something must be done.” In relation to the change issue, think about what sense-making changes might need to be enacted and how you would go about doing this. Assess this in terms of the eight elements of the sense-making framework suggested by Helms Mills and as set out :
• Identity construction
• Social sense-making
• Extracted cues
• Ongoing sense-making
• Retrospection
• Plausibility
• Enactment
• Projection
What ones did you feel you might have the most/least control over? Why? What implications does this have for adopting a sense-making approach to organizational change?
Prepare a 2 - 3 page document with your answers and thoughts in APA format.
The changes are the part of business. The organization changes time to time for the development and growth. The change in the technology from the earlier years is a kind of change. The culture of the business also changes over time. The change in the location of the business or the geographical areas. The rules and regulations also altered over the period of time. Change in the delivery system, the informational change, decision making changes, product changes etc. all done for the growth and for revenue generation.
The change in the process would benefits the business most of the time but it should be always taken the public interest into the mind. The process of change would not harm the environment. The interest of public if harmed would leads to the deterioration in the change process.
The sense-making changes made on the basis of the previous experiences of the business. It is a social activity. The sense making process need to enact is the collaborative experiences with the environment and the social business life. The company should have the liability to make a sustainability between business and the nature around the business. The process would be followed on keeping this fact. This would be done only considering the factors while taking the decision for any business activities. Its consequences are also identified in advance.
The sense making can be done in the following way:
• Identity construction – The problem identity should be identified in prior to the business process initialization.
• Social sense-making- The plausible stories are preserved, retained or shared and the audiences sense also preserved which includes the speaker themselves.
• Extracted cues – The people have to extract the clues that establish the link between the ideas to the vast meaning and link to the simple structure too.
• Ongoing sense-making – This is the ongoing process so every individual simultaneously shapes and react to their environment. The people project themselves to this environment and observe the consequences they lean.
• Retrospection – It effects what the people observe that means their attention and interruptions.
• Plausibility – People prefer Plausibility over accuracy as it is fruitless in the changing world.
• Enactment – The people enact with the environment where they face dialogues and narrations of the people.
• Projection- The projection is done by observing the facts and then applying on the situation they face.
I feel that we might have the most control over the extracted clues as they are extracted from the previous data that may not change in the future. We have least control over ongoing sense process because it changes over time and situations.
The implications do this have for adopting a sense-making approach to organizational change would modified the process. It would help in more interactive process. The business may have more number of unidentified components which has been discussed by this approach.
