Describe how this technology could improve communication. What are some barriers to use?
Clinical decision support (CDS) can be seen as an information system which facilitates the knowledge and individual-specific information to the clinician, patients, staff or any other person. The information can be filtered adequately or presented in the suitable format to fulfil the requirement of the person who is seeking this information. This will be quite helpful in improving the healthcare services. In order to improve the decision making in clinical workflow, a number of tools are employed in CDS. CDS has a significant positive influence on the quality improvement, safety enhancement, efficiency improvement and improved effectiveness of healthcare services.
These methods are quite useful in addressing the increasing information requirement of the clinician for effective decision making and it facilitates a platform which can be used to integrate the evidence-based information. At present both the standalone CDS or CDS as a part of EHR system is being employed in the healthcare industry.
The main barriers to CDS are as below:-
Most of the healthcare providers think that excessive reliance on CDS will reduce the clinical productivity and it can result in increased financial requirements.
CDS can also result in alert fatigue which is basically an event which is developed when the physician is provided with ill-prepared CDS system
The cost of implementing CDS is relatively huge. The implementation of the system is relatively lower in comparison to the operational cost as due to continuous upgrading of information, a lot of costs is involved in making the CDS up to date.
In order to implement this system, the unit will require the training of the healthcare staff on how to use the system which can hamper the daily operation of the unit.
