an older pateint ha s history of HTN and has been recent pelvic Fracture . has been prescribed iv morphine , naproxen, and diovan . what to do we need keep in mind before administering bp medication and assisting client out of bed
The patient is a case of pelvic fracture and with all supportive medicine to reduce pain and discomfort .
The patient is a known case of hypertension and on medication .
Administration of medicine like morphine can affect blood pressure . This will reduce blood pressure (hypotension.)
So in a patient with already having high bp , after the administration of morphine , BP will reduce and may reach near the normal limits . So in this patient if we give the routine antihypertensive medication without checking the present BP , it can leads to severe hypotension and cause dizziness , tiredness , palpitation ...
so if this patient is tried to move out of bed , there is chance
of more lowering of BP
(because of gravitational flow of blood to lower parts of body and
reduced blood flow to brain ) and cause giddiness and increased
risk of fall and other complications .
