A 65-year-old female admitted to the unit with a recurring bowel obstruction. She has been experiencing severe vomiting for several hours despite the use of antiemetics. An ABG is ordered with these results:
Patient: Test Patient 2
Date: April 10, 2007 1000
pH 7.50
PaCO2 40
HCO3- 35
pH |
PCO2 |
HCO3- |
Patient is in _____________________________________
Interventions may include: ________________________________________________
Analyzing the ABG report there is an abnormal increase in the pH and abnormal decrease in PaCo2
We know that this decrease in tissue PaCO2 leads to a decrease in hydrogen ion (H+) concentration, represented as an increase in pH as the environment undergoes the process of alkalosis.alkaline blood causes severe vomiting. There the patient is in alkalosis and interventions of alkalosis are usually treated by replacing water and electrolytes (sodium and potassium) while treating the cause.
