What is the importance of inverting the colored top tubes after drawing blood?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Colored top tube contains additives like anticoagulants and preservatives (EDTA, Lithium heparin, potassium oxalate, sodium fluoride). These additives are added in the tube to prevent blood from clotting and preserve glucose( to do certain laboratory test where plasma, whole blood is required )

To enusre adequate mixing of blood with additives, tube has to invert gently 8-10 times immediately after drawing the blood. The vigorous shaking of tube may cause hemolysis.

A phlebotomist prepares to draw three tubes of blood from an outpatient. The only vein that is visible is the basilic vein on the right arm. He was taught that the basilic vein is the last choice venipuncture because it is hard to anchor and a major nerve lies close to it, but it is so large that he decides he can draw it without a problem. When he inserts the needle, sure enough, the vein rolls and needle slips...
