Establish a trusting rapport with patients before asking the question. Determine the most appropriate time to ask the question. Ask the question before, during, and after history taking. The best time was immediately following history taking or physical examination.

The use of community health workers who speak the language and live the culture and social conditions of the patients can be very effective intermediaries. The physician also provides an effective means of obtaining such information.
