Barker’s Tidal Model of Mental Health Recovery – Case Study
Jessica is a 28-year old second-year medical resident working in a demanding, high stress environment. She has always been a high achiever, graduating with honors in both college and medical school. Jessica has high standards for herself and can be self-critical when she fails to meet them. Lately she has struggles with significant feelings of worthlessness and shame due to her inability to perform as she has in the past.
At work her fellow residents have noticed that she is often withdrawn and irritable. At home Jessica’s husband has noticed changes in her behavior. She has insomnia. He has heard her having tearful conversations with her closest friend. When he tries to get her to talk, she pushes him away saying “everything is fine.”
Although she has never considered suicide, Jessica has found herself increasingly dissatisfied with her life. She gets frustrated with herself because she thinks that she has every reason to be happy yet cannot shake her feelings of gloom. (Adapted from psyweb.com)
