  1. When a claim is credible it is properly supported by evidence, experience or self-evident. "A claim lacks inherent credibility to the extent that it conflicts with what we have observed or what we think we know - our background information - or with other credible claims" (Moore & Parker, 2017). It is credible if it asserts something that is known to be true. The source in which the claim comes from also has an influence on credibility. For example, some online sources can be biased or contain errors. When assessing a claim, you want to ask yourself if this claim conflicts with your personal observations or background knowledge. Then you would look into the source and if the source has real knowledge on the topic.

  1. Credibility can be defined as the quality or power of inspiring belief (Moore & Parker, 2017). “A claim lacks inherent credibility to the extent that it conflicts with what we have observed or what we think we know, our background information or with some credible claims” (Moore & Parker, 2017). Credible sources must be reliable with information that can be found true. Typically, a person who has a lot of information about a relevant claim can be seen as reliable. For example, if I am interested in learning how to sail, I would give credibility to a sailing instructor who has sailed around the world and has many tricks and tips for smooth sailing. The instructor is credible because their experience is real and truthful to this particular situation. If I needed confirmation about this particular topic, I may refer to a research article or textbook on how to sail.

Ways to evaluate a claim for credibility may be through credentials, experience, reliability, quality, and evidence that can be found in research articles and academic databases. It is important to find credible and reliable sources because there tends to be many unreliable sources that can be found in a person or even online that do not have accurate information.

Answer #1

It is generally reasonable to accept an unsupported claim if it does not conflict with your own observations, your background knowledge, or with other credible claims and if it comes from a credible source that you do not suspect of bias.

Credible means able to be trusted or believed.

There are several main criteria for determining whether a source is reliable or not.

1) Accuracy. Verify the information you already know against the information found in the source.

2) Authority. Make sure the source is written by a trustworthy author and/or institution.

3) Currency.

4) Coverage.
