in patients ages 65 and older, how does the use of an influenza vaccine influence their risk of developing pneumonia during the flu season?

Answer #1

The risk of post influenza pneumonia in elderly is increased according to number of concurrent comorbidities.  The influenza vaccination effectiveness is low in individual of 65 years and above, who are at heightened risk of post influenza pneumonia. Influenza vaccines lacks effectiveness in elderly during seasons with Antigenic mismatch. It is unclear that the conventional influenza vaccines are effective for preventing pneumonia during seasons with marked antigenic drift.
