Infant with a cleft palate experence can sometime have other
health issues. These issues are:
- trouble feeding- it is difficult to create a
suction needed to pull milk out of the bottle or to the
breast.
- speech dificulties- caused by the soft palate
not being able to properly close off the mouth from the nose at the
time of speaking and therefore letting air escape through the
nose.
- hearing loss-Glue ear (Otitis Media with
Effusion) is the common problem created bycleft palate.
- frequent ear infections
- trouble breathing- frequently produce nasal
deformities that tends to reduce the size of nasal airways.
- eye problems-because of facial dysmorphism
which is present at the time of birth along with cleft palate
- sometimes have smaller brain volumes with a frontal lobes and
certain subcortical nuclei being most affected.
