In may2018 there was an outbreak of ebola virus in the repeblic of congo. It was the 9 th outbreak of ebola. This time the CDC, the DRC government and WHO provide support bu including establishing and outbreak response platform. Out of 54 cases 38 cases was laboratory confirmed and 33 deaths were reported.
The government of congo report the outbreak on may 8 after 2 cases were confirmed by laboratory testing at national institute de recherche biomedicale in kinshasha. These cases reported in north Kivu province, also in ituri and south kivu province.
The Ebola virus spreads through direct contact. By broken skins, musous membrane, eyes nose and mouth. The virus initially spread by an infected animal such as bat. After one person is affected then it fastly spread in between.
The virus may cause dry symptoms primarily like fever pain and fatigueand then progress to wet symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting Also cause severe symptoms like hemorrhage or bruising. Once the person is affected, then the symptoms may occur in 8 to 10 days mostly.
The ebola virus infection is diagnosed from the blood test after the onset of symptoms polymerase chain reaction is the best method to find ebola virus.
The treatment of ebola virus include symptomatic treatment like treating fever vomiting diarrhea etc
Maintaing the fluid balance of the patient. Providing oxygen support if necessary. And mainly to isolate the patients who affected will helps to reduce the spread of disease. There is approved vaccine available against ebola virus. Also other methods like PPE use, proper screening, lab testing, cleaning and disinfection will help to reduce the spread of disease.
As a nurse we have an important role in the containment of the disease. We have to provide proper health education for the patient.
We have to inform the patient to avoid contact with the blood and body fluids of the patiet who is ill. Avoiding sexual contact. So of the items which come in contact with the affected persons must be avoided like clothes medical equipment etc. Advice the persons to avoid the consumption of suspected animals meat.
