Answer #1

Answer:

Data available:

Adult dose of Rocephin – 0.5gm IM b.i.d

BSA of the child – 0.51m2

Child dose based on BSA and the usual adult dose – 0.5gm/m2

Rocephin is reconstituted to 250mg/ml.

Solution:

Child dose = 0.5gm/m2

Converting gm. to mg, we get 0.5gm = 500mg

Therefore the child dose is 500mg/m2

Dose based on BSA = 500mg/ 0.51m2

                                   = 500mg x 0.51m2 = 255mg/ dose.

Daily dose = 255mg x 2 doses = 510mg/day.

After reconstitution Rocephin is available as 250mg/ml.

Since 1 ml contains 250mg of Rocephin, to calculate the total milliliters per dose,

Xml = 1.02ml

Therefore 1.02ml of Rocephin should be administered to the child for every dose.
