Kevin will be placed on lansoprazole (Prevacid) 30 mg orally daily to decrease the production of hydrochloric acid.
a) How does lansoprazole decrease gastric acid production?
b) What is the difference between the actions of lansoprazole and ranitidine?
a) Iansoprazole is an acid proton pump inhibitor. It suppresses gastric acid suppression. This is done through inhibition of the H+-K+ ATPAse enzyme system which secretes this acid. So, It blocks these enzymes at the surface of gastric parietal cells thereby decreasing the production of hydrochloric acid.
b) Ranitidine is an H2 receptor antagonist. Like lansozplansole Ranitidine also reduces the secretion of hydrochloric acidaaci. But it does so by blocking the H2 histamine receptors at the surface of gastric parietal cells while lansoprazole decreases the production of hydrochloric acid by inhibition of the H+-K+ATPAse enzyme system.
