The patient receives a new order for Phenobarbital. The nurse looks

up the medication, and finds the dosage range for Phenobarbital is 3-6 mg/kg/day. What is the safe dosage range per day for a patient weighing 55 lbs? __________

Homework Answers

Answer #1

order dosage = 3-6 mg/ kg/day

weight of the patient = 55 lbs

Change the weight of the patient from pounds (lbs) to Kg, because order dosage is given is kg.

To convert pounds to Kg, divide by 2.2 to the given weight in pound

= 55/2.2 kg

= 25 kg

Calculate the safe dose by using the order dose 3- 6 mg/kg/day.

multiply the weight of the patient in kg by 3 and 6 to get the desire safe dosage range.

= 25 x 3

= 75 mg

Multiply the weight by 6 to get the last desire safe dose range

=25 x 6

= 150 mg

Hence the safe dose range from 75 mg -150 mg can be adminstered per day for the patient.
