Steven Johnson syndrome
It is a rare and serious disorder of skin and mucous membrane. It is due to reaction to medication that starts with flu like symptoms followed by painful rashes and blisters.
It is a medical emergency that requires hospitalization.
Symptoms -fever, sore throat, fatigue, burning eyes, blisters on the skin, Red or purplish rash.
Pathophysiology -it is a type IV hypersensitivity reaction where the medication stimulates cytotoxic T cells and helper T cells to initiate autoimmune reaction.
Nursing interventions
-pain medication to reduce discomfort
-medication to reduce inflammation eyes and mucous membranes such as topical steroids.
-antibiotics to control infection when needed
-depending upon severity other medications can be included like oral corticosterone.
- fluid replacement and nutrition.
-wound care, eye care.
