what is the priority teaching for a patient who has been prescribed hydrocortisone for adrenal insufficiency?

Ans. A. Importance of adequate sodium in the diet.

Hydrocortisone is a class of corticosteroids is used to treat adrenocortical deficiency (Addison's disease). Usually, the patient requires long time replacement of adrenal cortex hormone, so the patient and the family members should be instructed for sodium supplement and to increase it based on the dosage of medication. The reason is the patient is naturally unable to retain the sodium due to lack of sodium and fluid loss through kidneys, sweating etc. So the adequate amount of sodium and potassium is needed to maintain fluid and electrolyte balances.
