Can Aspirin / NSAIDs: Consider vulnerability of elders due to over the counter, and can affordable nature of this analgesic result in an ethical or legally charged situation

Homework Answers

Answer #1

NSAIDs are associated with the occurrence of serious adverse drug reactions, particularly of the gastrointestinal toxicity specifically peptic ulcer, cardiovascular & renal tract.

NSAIDs also are common culprit in hospitalisation due to drug to drug interactions because they interact negatively with commonly prescribed medications such as Aspirin,SSRIs & antihypertensives. Prescribers should be attentive to the past medical history of each patient, regardless of age, to avoid potential adverse drug reactions.

based on widely quoted population study, it can be estimated that there are 8528 hospitalisations for gastric and duodenal ulcer bleeding per annum in UK. Based on estimates, that between 20% & 25% are casually associated with intake of non aspirin NDAIDs, & approximately 10% more with aspirin used for cardiovascular prophylaxis.
